We spent our time with walk on the beach, a spectacular sunset and an ill-advised combination of Sri Lanka’s beloved Lion beer & traditional coconut arrack. Ambalangoda is a renowned turtle hatching beach, with more than four of the world’s seven species of turtles frequenting its shores to lay their eggs. Abbas and me ventured early morning one day to catch glimpse of these ‘gentle giants’ and could actually reach out within touching distance of them. To our delight, they were extremely friendly in demeanour and allowed us to touch them, be next to them in a manner almost able to hug them underwater. It was definitely one of the most unforgettable experiences.
